If you are new to fiber networks, the three acronyms OLT, ONT, and ONU cause more confusion than any others in GPON. This page explains what each device does, how they work together, and the key difference between an ONT and an ONU.
The OLT is the device at the service provider's central office or local exchange. It is the starting point of the GPON network and controls all traffic on the fiber. A single OLT port connects, through passive splitters, to up to 32, 64, or even 128 subscriber devices. The OLT sends data downstream to every home and schedules when each home is allowed to transmit upstream. In short: one OLT serves many households, and it lives at the provider, not in your home.
The ONU also sits at the customer end and does the same core job of converting optical signals to electrical ones. In everyday use, "ONU" and "ONT" are often used interchangeably. The subtle difference: an ONU generally refers to a simpler unit that terminates the fiber and then hands off to separate customer equipment (common in EPON and business setups), while an ONT is the complete, integrated all-in-one unit at the subscriber. "ONU" is the term more common in IEEE/EPON documentation, whereas "ONT" is standard in ITU-T/GPON. For most home GPON users, the box on your wall is an ONT.
