XGS-PON (10-Gigabit-capable Symmetric Passive Optical Network) is defined by the ITU-T G.9807.1 standard. It delivers symmetric 10 Gbps speeds - roughly 10 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream - compared with GPON's 2.5 Gbps down and 1.25 Gbps up. The "S" stands for symmetric, which is its headline advantage: upload speed matches download speed, which matters for cloud backup, video conferencing, and business use.
Speed: GPON is 2.5G down / 1.25G up (asymmetric). XGS-PON is 10G down / 10G up (symmetric). Standard: GPON follows ITU-T G.984; XGS-PON follows ITU-T G.9807.1. Wavelengths: this is the key to coexistence - GPON uses 1490 nm downstream and 1310 nm upstream, while XGS-PON uses 1577 nm downstream and 1270 nm upstream. Because they use different wavelengths, both can run over the same fiber at the same time. Split ratio and reach are similar (up to 1:64 or more, up to 20 km). Cost: XGS-PON optics and equipment cost more per port today, but prices continue to fall as adoption grows.
Yes. This is one of the biggest practical advantages for network operators. Because GPON and XGS-PON transmit on different wavelengths, an operator can add a WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) filter at the central office and run both technologies simultaneously over the existing fiber and splitters. This lets providers upgrade customers to 10G XGS-PON gradually - moving high-demand subscribers to XGS-PON while leaving others on GPON - without rebuilding the outside plant. This smooth migration path is a major reason XGS-PON has become the mainstream next step rather than a full replacement.
For most homes today, GPON already delivers more than enough bandwidth, and it remains the most cost-effective choice for mass residential deployment. XGS-PON makes sense where symmetric multi-gig speeds are needed: business services, mobile backhaul, high-density multi-dwelling units, and future-proofing. Since both run on the same fiber, the practical answer for many operators is not either/or - it is deploy GPON now and layer XGS-PON on top as demand grows.
